PUBLIC HEARING
BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
October 1, 1987
CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS
CITY HALL, BEAUMONT, TEXAS
2:00 P.M.
A meeting of the Board of Adjustment was held on October 1, 1987 with the
following members present:
Chairman Milton Bell
Board Member Ron Lanier
Board Member Gerald Farha
Board Member Bettye Smith
Board Members absent: Whit Outlaw, Preston Shaw and Charles Thompson.
Also present: Kirt Anderson, Senior Planner/Landscape Architect, Tyrone
Cooper, Assistant City Attorney and Walterine Brown, Recording Secretary.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Board Member Lanier made a motion to approve the minutes of September 3,
1987.
Seconded by Board Member Smith.
Vote carried: 4-0.
FILE 327-BA. Request for a variance to the Zoning Ordinance Sign Regulations
for a sign in a residential zoning district (Sec. 30-28B.(1)(a) and (c) to
increase the sign square foot area and to allow internal illumination; Westgate
Memorial Baptist Church located at 6220 Westgate Drive.
The staff recommended approval based on: 1) granting of the variance would
not be contrary to the public interest 2) the literal enforcement of the
ordinance would result in unnecssary hardship as related to the ordinance
and that by granting the variance the spirit of the ordinance would be done.
The recommendation is conditional on two items: 1) the sign as being proposed
be placed perpendicular to the front property line so that it shines east
and west along the street instead of across the street, 2) the applicant
provide landscaping screening or a fence screening to prevent the light from
the sign falling on the residences immediately to the east of the location.
