An industrious child, he became the first black newspaper carrier in Kountze, Texas, before moving to Beaumont in 1981. He married Carry McKinney in 1981, and they had four children. McKinney received a minister's license and preached his first sermon in 1997, and was ordained in 2000. He became pastor of Jenkins Memorial in 2002. He has also served as a chaplain for the Beaumont Independent School District, from 1999 to 2004. This collection holds papers commemorating his tenth anniversary as pastor of Jenkins Memorial, in 2012. They include a program for the celebration banquet held by the church, and a special insert of The Kountze News presented at the banquet, along with a photocopy of the insert. Detailed biographical information and an account of his time as pastor are also included. Finally, the collection contains a proclamation from the Mayor of Beaumont, Becky Ames, officially recognizing McKinney for his service to the community, on April7, 2012.
