Ben C. Stuart Manuscripts, 1913-1925
DESCRIPTION
Ben C. Stuart was born Benjamin Chambers Stuart in Galveston, Texas, on April 20, 1847. He was a
prominent Texasjournlist and historian in the late I 800 and early 1900s. His father, Hamilton Stuart,
started the Galveston Civilian newspaper with Levi Jones and Robert A. bion. Ben Stuart worked fifteen
years for the Galveston Civilian and for twenty-five years as a reporter and editor for the Galveston News.
After retiring, Ben Stuart moved to Beaumont in 1911 to live with his sister, Eleanore Minor, but still
contributed to the Galveston News. During this time in Beaumont he also wrote historical sketches and
published two volumes: Texas Indian Fighters and Frontier Rangers (1916) and History of Early Texas
Newspapers (1917). He died on March 11, 1929. After his death his sister, Eleanore Minor, donated
bound volumes of Ben Stuart's handwritten manuscripts on topics related to Texas to the Tyrrell Library.
This collection consists of twelve of Ben C. Stuart's handwritten, bound manuscripts about Texas history
covering topics such as railroads, pioneers, and hurricanes. The following titles are included:
