Beaumont Music Commission Collection, 1930s1960s
DESCRIPTION
In 1922, the City of Beaumont put together a Music Week to celebrate music in Beaumont. After its
success, city manager George Roark appointed an eight person committee to coordinate activities of
future Music Weeks and other musical activities in the Beaumont area. This was the beginning of the
Beaumont Music Commission whose first president was Mr. M.E. Moore. The original objectives of the
Commission including promoting the annual Music Week, supporting local music clubs, working towards
creation of a new auditorium and symphony, helping young artists, and sponsoring community concerts.
In 1933, Nancy Strong became president of the Beaumont Music Commission and remained in that post
until 1964, when she passed away. During her tenure as president she launched the Artist Series in 1934
and is credited with bringing national and international artists to Beaumont including Van Clibum, the
Vienna Boys Choir, and Itzhak Perlman.
This collection includes originals and reprints of photographs from actors, actresses, conductors, dancers,
musicians, and singers, who played in Beaumont. Many of these photographs are signed by the artists to
Nancy Strong. There are also photographs of Nancy Strong with some of the artists.
