Tom J. Russell Scrapbook, 1905-1914,1948,1977
DESCRIPTION
Judge Thomas Jefferson "Tom J." Russell was born in Green County, Pennsylvania, on February, 17,
1836. He was educated in Pennsylvania, lived in a number of locations throughout the Midwest and
South, and served in the Confederacy during the Civil War. In 1869, Tom Russell came to Beaumont and
helped establish the first telegraph office here. He was personally acquainted with a number of early
Beaumont residents. In 1905, Tom J. Russell began writing a series of articles about his recollections of
these pioneer families that ran in the Beaumont Journal between 1905 and 1914. Families mentioned in
these articles include those with the surnames Alexander, Ashworth, Averill, Buckley, Carroll, Caswell,
Chaison, Clubb, Collins, Cuniff, Fletcher, Garner, Goodhue, Herring, Hillebrandt, Junket, Keith, Kidd,
Langham, Leonard, Long, McFaddin, Millard, O'Brien, Ogden, Patillo, Pipkin, Pivoto, Roberts,
Robertson, Rogers, Russell, Smyth, Spell, Tevis, West, and Wiess.
This small collection consists of a scrapbook entitled "Pioneer Reminiscences of Jefferson County,"
comprised of Tom J. Russell's articles for the Beaumont Journal and other clippings. This scrapbook was
created by his son, Victor Russell, and donated to the Tyrrell Historical Library by the Col. George
Moffett Chapter of the D.A.R.
