HomeMy WebLinkAboutAC149_MILAM_FAMILY_PAPERSTHE TYRRELL HISTORICAL LIBRARY AC -149 Milam Family Papers, 1918-1984 DESCRIPTION Mrs. Eloise Milam was described by her friends as having a golden voice, boundless energy, sparkling personality, and a sincere love for teenage girls who gave unselfishly of her time and talents. During the World War 11 years she did her part for the war effort with her Melody Maids, bringing entertainment to the armed forces by singing at military installations and veterans' hospitals all over the world. Mrs. Milam is the only woman Texas Ranger (honorary). 1n 1961 she was given the Distinguished Service Award by the American Legion Post #33 and was named "Grandmother of the Year" in 1964. Dr. Lena Milam was born in Sweet Springs, Missouri, October 19, 1884, and lived in Missouri until she was ten years old. In 1903, she moved to Beaumont with her father, H.F. Triplett, Superintendent of Beaumont Schools. 1n 1905, Milam married Allen Barnes Milam and eventually raised three children. She taught school in Beaumont and served as the Beaumont School District's Music Supervisor from 1911 to 1955. Lena Milam had a profound impact on the development of the musical arts in Beaumont. Along with the Hamed sisters, she co-founded the Music Study Club, the Beaumont Music Commission, and helped organize Music Week in Beaumont. Lena Milam was well loved by the citizens of Beaumont, who knew her as "Aunt Lena." This collection consists largely of binders of correspondence, genealogical information, and newspaper and magazine clippings related to the Milam family. One binder of information is devoted to Lena Triplett Milam. There is also genealogical information for other families including the Dickey, Duncan, Farris, Frierson, Gordon, Harris, ]jams, McClamroch, Mullen, Payne, Redden, Rush, Triplett, and Wheeler families.
