The American Association of University Women Collection, 1937-1997

The American Association of University Women (AAUW), Beaumont Branch, formed March
25, 1937 around a program of study and action in the areas of community education, cultural
interests, and international relations. Membership comprises women who held baccalaureate
degrees from a college or university accredited by the National AAUW. Sorority affiliation was
not required and the national organization desegregated in 1949. Twenty-five Beaumonters were
among the original charter members with Mrs. J.A. Bybee as their first branch president The
Beaumont branch summarized its mission in 1965 when it declared that the organization sought
to "educate women so that they might wield an intelligent influence on society."
This collection contains ten volumes of scrapbooks pieced together between 1937 and 1974.
They are arranged chronologically by month and year. Each scrapbook includes a collection of
yearbooks, monthly newsletters, membership rosters, and photographs. A well arranged and
preserved compilation of newspaper articles faithfully recount the activities of the Beaumont
branch in study groups and community outreach programs.
