BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
THAT the City Manager be and He is hereby authorized to support an application for a
State Historical Designation, which will provide the History for the 1943 Beaumont Race Riots
located at 801 Pearl Street, in Beaumont, Texas.
The meeting at which this resolution was approved was in all things conducted in strict
compliance with the Texas Open Meetings Act, Texas Governnhent Code, Chapter 551.
PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL of the City of Beaumont this the 29th day of
October, 2024.

Reason for Request of a Certificate of
In 1943, racial tensions In Beaumont were worsened by the
Appropriateness
pressures of World War II and Increased population related to
Beaumont's shipbuilding Industry. On June 16, the tenslon reached
a head when a white woman accused a Black ratan of assault. For
five days that followed, mobs raged In the streets of downtown
Beaurnont, converging on the Police Department, and ,Jail,
demanding to search all prisoners for the attacker. Three people lost
their lives, thousands were Injured, the Black sections of Gladys and
Forsylh Streets were ravaged, with over a dozen fires being fought by
the Fire Department. Ultimately (lie Texas Rangers and National
Guard were brought in to establish martial law. In great irony, our
nation was engaged In war battling genocide due to racism and
supremacy, the very issue Mat cost over 200,000 labor hours of
wartime shipbuilding during the week of the Beaumont Race Riots.

2024 UNDERTOLD MARKER APPLICATION
Request for Consideration for Marker Application Funds
In 2006, the Texas Historical Commission established the Undertold Program to address gaps In the
marker program and underrepresented topics. This form constitutes a request for the Texas Historical
Commission (THC) to consider approval of an Official Texas Historical Marker for the undertold topic in
this application using Marker Application Funds. The THC will review the request and make its
determination based on adopted rules, procedures and scoring criteria. The final determination of
eligibility and approval for a state marker will be made by the THC.
