BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL

OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
THAT, the City Manager be, and he is hereby authorized to support an
application for a State Historical Designation, for placement on the National Register of
Historic Places, and for the installation markers on City property at The Temple to the
Brave.
The meeting at which this resolution was approved was in all things conducted in
strict compliance with the Texas Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code, Chapter
551.
PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL of the City of Beaumont this the 9th day of
May, 2023.

The 111pkin Park Honor Guard writes to you today to request coils icleration of the Temple to the Brave for
the National Register of Historic Places.
World War 1 was thought to be the vvar to end all Wars by many residents of Beatiniont,'rexas and tine
country, To celebrate the ending of World War I, the Colonel George Moffett Chapter of the National
Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution "DAR" rallied the community to donate towards Cite
creation of a temple. Despite it being the time of "The Great Depression," there Was a fervor of Patriotism
among the citizens and they donated enough flmcls to construct the'reruple It, 1931. Since Its openhtg and
to tills day, the'lemple serves as a War Museum which is open to the public on Palrlotic Holidays or by
appointment and Includes War memorabilia. .

Significant Dates

to be tised as a city park. Tlhe park was named "Stove Pipkin Park" in honor of prominent citizen
"Steplheil Walker Pipkin" in 1920 who had been ins(runhental in the purchase of the land for (lie park. In
2003, city managemeot suggested that Pipkin Park be sold along with other small parks with low usage
but the idea was rejected by City Council, In 2007 the park was renamed to "Pipkin Patriots Park" at Ills
request of the DAR. In 2019, a District Boy Scout Honor Gtlat"(i was formed all(I was immed "Tale Pipkin
Park Honor Guard" Using the parks namesake as a tribute to tile location that is the lhollhe of the'femple
To The Brave.
A Revolu(Ionary Soldier Jean Baptist Chalson was burled in the Arou Cemetery where tile DAR placed a
memorial stone in 19d 11 111 1969, the stone was relocated to the Southeast side of the temple by the DAR
after it was removed frohu tile, eenhetery due to construction of a church, In 1976, a Texas Historical
Marker 1101101-ing Chaison was placed !hear (lie Stolle of the temple.
Eagle Scout Rzettiel Uribe who is the grandson of the Tompie's curator Dennis Write, constructed a stone
Veterans Memorial in 2020 to llleluodalin all Wars which is placed oil the Northwest side of (lie Temple.
The Daughters of the American Revolution Colonel George Moffe(( Chapter desired to bitiid a temple to
memorialize World War 1 and obtained a city permit to construct the'{emple ill 1931. Constl'nction begall

surrender to George Washington. In 1974, plexiglass Zvas placed over broken windows. In 2003, the DAR
placed a marker on the Temple identifying it as a DAR Historical Monument, In 2007, tale DAR
coordinated a repair campaign in which witldol\'S were repaired, walls replastered and 14VAC added, In

Historical OvervieNy
The Temple To Tlic Brave was and is still today a tribute to (lie i1tilitary service memhers who are fighting
or who have fought for our freedon) and to the desire for peace in the world, As wars become forgotten
and tinge marchcs forward, the'rempla sei'ves as a reminder to us all to remember Ilse past. "Those who
cannot millembcr the pam are Condemned to repeat it," The significance of the Temple To The Wave is
demonstrated bolls by the physical I3tti1ding itself and the contents within It.
The historie'temtlle'I'o'I'lic Brave whit its stallied glass windows, vaulted ceiling and stone exterior
showcases excepticilal craftsmanship and design.
The Tomple To The Brave is a rare tangible reminder of wars that came before us and demonstrates what
can be doge when we wort: together, Businesses donated a majority of the materials for the cause and
organizations such ns the DAR itself, Women's Clubs, American Legion and Boy Scouts of America
along with private citizens carte together to make the initiative a reality.
Tho long-term goal of the 111pkin Park Honor Chiud is to ensure the Temple remains relevant, adequately
supported and visible by (lie public. As a Property on lire HaLlonal Historic Registry, the Temple cat► be
cligiblc fol, mccting a reciuirement of the American heritage Merit Badge and subsequently causing more
Youth to \°isit the Temple and learn about our war history.
