Louisville, Kentucky; ig2os. Side porches are con"MI, on Colonial Revival houses (see fig"Fes 3, 4, acid 7)- 3. Louisville, Kentucky; 1930s. Another Regency house (see also page 33 1, Figuro 6). This type of 11jetal entry porch with a canopy roof is a char- acteristic Regency leature. 4. Kansas City, Missouri; igios. Although at first glance this looks like an accurate copy, the roof overhang is too wide and the windows too broad for an original colonial house. S. Cleveland, Ohio; iq2os. The entry porch with a curvtd underside is a favored Revival detail. 6. Dallas,'I'exas, 1941- Young House. Small round windows (above the entry here and in the gahle end of FigUrc 3) were widely used in the late 19305, '40s, and early '5os on Colonial Revival houses and on other styles. - 7. Dallas, Texas, 19 19. Thornsor, i iouse. 'this example was inspired by the Middle Colonies Georgian house. Note the pent roof and the hood over the entry. The side porch to the left has a sommer sleeping porch above with windows on three sides. These were especially favored in the South where they appear in many early loth -Century StYles. 8. Cambridge, Massachusetts; iqo3. John W. Ames, architect. This house demonstrates that reasonably accurate Colonial copies were being designed in the early years of the Revival; those with exaggerated detailing were, however, far morc coninion. 9. Louisville, Kentucky; ig2os. The garden facade of a very large cxarn- pie. Note the door SUTround with the pediment extending over the side- lights but lacking a fanlight. Although this combination eras never used in colonial houses, the example here faithfully captures the spirit Of a GeOF- gi-,in or Adam doorway. 7-7 ;I Ljt7V 7 1,11111 ,, Colonial Revival MR 3 -V 2 3 Colonial Revival 333
