8.^BUEC_: A request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to consider new porch columns.

STAFF REPORT
Vaughan Samples requests permission to rernove the four (4) existing front porch posts and
replace with two (2) new square columns Lotheir horne located at 2350 South Street. The
current porch columns are rotted and are four (4) by four (4) in profile. Mr. Samples wishes to
remove those oo|unmns and replace with two (2), ten (10) by six (6) columns. He intends to
paint the new columns to match the existing color scheme of his home.
This home is categorized as a Craftsman style house. Examples of this are in A FieldGu/de to
American Houses (McAlester et o[, pg. 463). Larger posts with a column base seem to be
appropriate for homes within this era.
Planning staff recommends approval of this request with the following condition:
1. A column base shall be installed at the bottom of the posts.
This hOLIse is not listed in the SPARE Beaumont Survey.

LETTER FOR PROPOSED CHANGES

To Whom It May Concern:
As requested, the proposed changes for 2350 South St. are as follow:
1.) Remove the rotten damaged columns on the front porch
2.) Replace damaged columns with Cedar wood columns
3.) Power wash brick and exterior paint
4.) Update exterior paint color due to molded peeling paint
S. Add UV protectant window screens for ventilation and energy efficiency
We love the historical aspects. of Old Town and just want to bring our home back to it's
full potential.
