HomeMy WebLinkAboutCA-162DATE: October 7, 1996 TO: Historic Landmark Commission FROM: Stephen C. Richardson, Planning Director SUBJECT: Request for determination of historic significance and approval of demolition of five single family residential structures, one garage apartment and one apartment house located at 2365 Orange, 2381 Orange, 2395 Orange, 2380 Victoria, 2390 Victoria, 2392 Victoria and 2370-74 Victoria, respectively FILE: CA-162 STAFF REPORT The Planning Director recommends that the structures be deemed "not historically significant" and approved for demolition. These single family residential structures, garage apartment and apartment house are all located in Block 7, Ogden Addition, adjacent to Ogden Elementary School. These properties are to be used by BISD for expansion of Ogden School. The City of Beaumont is cooperating with the school district in this building effort. Due to the use of CDBG funds, these structures were forwarded to the Texas Historical Commission, whereby they were deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as part of a potential historic district. The Texas Historical Commission has determined that these houses are significant as part of early 20th Century residential fabric. None of these structures are included in SPARE Beaumont. Research in the City Directory shows that most of these structures were built in the mid- 1920s. Because of the apparently sound condition of several of these structures, Planning Staff asked Sam Pullig for his assistance in seeing about the possibility of moving some of these structures to different locations. Mr. Pullig made several contacts and some people are interested in acquiring the better houses and moving them. However, no final decisions have been made. Staff recommends that the structures be deemed "not historically significant" and recommended for demolition. Staff feels that while the loss of some of these structures will be regrettable, the expansion of Ogden Elementary School will have much more of a positive impact on the overall preservation of the neighborhood. : 1 6P .I00 _ 61 10 !i I, it /J i to !o 15 K 5 to !3 C _.r-M --- J-- 14. re _30 a = I l! ' OY OGDEN• SC1I00L - e" 13 IS If.0 9 ECT PRO /r I p !t „ A f.9 34 I 19 soo If nL de I 19 is IF J to -- 3 so I ! 11 .+ so _ J9 is Il - eo t t1 r d of — pr _ - s $ L VAR to r 1 Io -- Or .t = •o Go 2w rer9 =2 5I 0 ,F9 Pe . !
