following members present:

Chairman Pullig deferred approval of the February 10, 1997 meeting minutes until the next
meeting.
REGULAR MEETING
1) DISCUSSION OF POSSIBLE HISTORIC DESIGNATIONS
Chairman Pullig referenced a newspaper article in the Beaumont Enterprise on
February 19, 1997 that mentioned a black history tour of Beaumont in conjunction with
February/Black History Month. The article identified several structures in Beaumont,
particularly in Charlton Pollard.
Chairman Pullig asked the Commission if they had suggestions for possible historic
designations.

Commissioner Watler listed several sites for possible historic markers:
1) The White House Dry Goods Store, which was built in 1940. The City of
Beaumont has just acquired this property.
2) Phelan Mansion that is now the St. Elizabeth Hospital convent
3) Temple of the Brave
4) Confederate Soldiers Statue at Weiss Park
S) Central High School (Old Beaumont High)
6) Fire Station #7, located at McFaddin and First Street
7) The Cokinos House at 947 Hazel
8) Pig Stand #41 on Calder, built in 1943
9) Julie Rogers Theater (Chairman Pullig said there was a marker for old City
Hall/City Auditorium)
10) George Millard Statue at Pipkin Park
Discussion of plaques, site markers and Tevis Market followed.
In response to Chairman Pullig, Commissioner Levy said she would have some
information on Hebert House soon.
Commissioner O'Rear invited Kathy Weathington to address the Commission.
Kathy Weathington of the Convention and Visitors Bureau addressed the Commission.
She said that she receives a lot of calls from visitors wanting information on walking
tours of Old Town. She presented her idea of walking tours of the Oaks Historic
District as a possible project for the Historic Landmark Commission.
Discussion of possible ideas for tours continued.
Continued discussion of sites to possibly receive historic markers.
Chairman Pullig referred to a Frank Lloyd Wright -design house located somewhere
around 19th - 21st Streets and Longfellow and it possibly having a marker placed there.
Commissioner Cathy Belt also had some suggestions for possible historic markers:
1) Also mentioned the Cokinos House at 947 Hazel. It is Queen Anne style and
dates back to the early 1900's.

2) The home at 2205 North, owned by Mark McDonald. It is a Colonial Revival
style built about 1925 and contains approximately 4,000 sq. ft. The home was
owned by G. T. Adams, President of S and L Adams Company.
Chairman Pullig said he had talked to Chris Quinn, who owns the house at Eighth and
Long. W. Quinn is interested in receiving a historic marker for his home.
Discussion between Commissioners regarding Victoria and Orange Street area.
Chairman Pullig told the Commission that Mayor Moore had suggested that he and
Stephen Richardson try to get a feel for possible community participation for the
Spindletop 2001 celebration.
Discussion between Chairman Pullig and Kathy Weathington on conventions in
Beaumont followed.
Discussion of moving Spindletop to the west end of downtown area in conjunction with
the Spindletop Celebration followed. Chairman Pullig said that they need to identify
businesses that have been in business for 100 years.
2) REVOLVING LOAN FUND
Chairman Pullig reviewed the Historic Preservation Loan Fund Status Report.
3) CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Chairman Pullig asked that the housesfbusinesses for possible historic designation be
highlighted in the minutes.
Councilman Cokinos suggested that the site of the old Crosby House at Laurel and
Orleans receive a historical marker.
Commissioner Broussard informed the Commission of the celebration that Texas City
is having during the first two weeks in April to commemorate the 50th anniversary of
the big explosion.
Chairman Pullig suggested that the next outing of the Commission be to Spindletop.
