HomeMy WebLinkAboutCA-178DATE: April 14, 1997 TO: Historic Landmark Commission FROM: Stephen C. Richardson, Planning Director SUBJECT: Request to consider an application for a certificate of appropriateness to renovate the exterior of an existing single family structure located at 1645 Orange St. FILE: CA-178 STAFF REPORT The Planning Director recommends approval of this request to renovate the exterior of an existing single family structure located at 1645 Orange St. The existing structure was built c. 1905. It is of the Classical Revival/Stick style. The house was originally built for Benjamin Shipley, a Jefferson County Clerk. The house has a City of Beaumont Historic Marker. The current owner recently bought the house to be used for his residence. The house has been vacant for awhile and is showing serious signs of deterioration. The most critical defect is the roof on the rear portion of the house. It is leaking badly and causing extensive interior damage. In addition, the house needs to be leveled. The applicant will reroof the house, repair siding, level the house and replace windows and doors previously boarded up. Balcony rails once located on the second floor will be duplicated from other homes of that time period. Eventually a wood fence with posts that would replicate the balcony rails is to be constructed. The garage is to be reroofed, siding and windows repaired, a metal stairway installed and foundation leveled. Exhibits are attached.
