STAFF REPORT
Mr. Kenneth Weldon, property owner, wishes to demolish the residential structure at 1842
Liberty.
The house burned on Dec. 10, 1997. Mr. Weldon does not wish to rehabilitate the house
so he has not looked at the cost of rehabilitation. The appraised value of the property is
$23,090 improvements; $28,740 total, He does not have any plans with the lot if he is
given permission to demolish the house.
The house was built c. 1905 and is of the Queen Anne style. The 1989 SPARE states that
the house is one of Beaumont's few surviving examples of a two story Queen Anne house.
SPARE went on to say that the building retains much of its original ornamentation and is
representative of larger middle class homes built in the city around the turn of the century.
In 1989, the house was considered in poor condition. The house was structurally 'sound
but there were signs of deterioration. Since that time, work had been done to make the
house habitable. Mr. Weldon was living in the house at the time of the fire. The fire
occurred in the front two rooms of the first floor.
The Historic Landmark Commission is asked to review this structure for historical
significance and if it should be demolished.
