TO: Historic Landmark Commission
FROM: Stephen C. Richardson, Planning Director
SUBJECT: 1999 CLG Application
For the 1999 CLG, the Planning Division is requesting funding for travel expenses to the
annual CLG conference for two commission members and one staff person and for the
funding a historic tour brochure.
It has long been the desire of the Historic Landmark Commission to create a historic tour
brochure to be used by Iocals and tourists alike. This year the Commission created a six
member task force whose job it is to develop this brochure.
For the most part, the buildings and sites proposed to be included in the brochure are those
with local, state or National Register designations. The sites are located throughout the
city. The brochure will consist of approximately 40-50 sites and will include pictures and
text.
Any monies from CLG will require a local match. The Old Town Neighborhood
Association has graciously agreed to donate the matching funds.
Exhibits are attached.
CLG PROJECT PROPOSAL
1999
The City of Beaumont Historic Landmark Commission has two objectives that this grant is
intended to address. Approval of this grant would aid the City of Beaumont in its efforts to
preserve Beaumont's physical past cultural heritage.
FIRST OBJECTIVE
The first objective is to continue the education of our commissioners and staff. To accomplish
this, the Commission is requesting grant support in sending one commissioner and one staff
member to the annual state CLG conference in 1999. The Historic Landmark decided long ago
that it was important that its members should attend an educational conference on a recurring
basis.
SECOND OBJECTIVE
Scope of Work:
Prepare a tour brochure of historic buildings and sites located within or near the City of
Beaumont. The development of the brochure will begin April, 1999 and be completed
within three months.
Methodology:
The Chairman of the Historic Landmark Commission has appointed a six member
committee. The goal of this committee is to identify buildings and sites to be included in
the brochure and develop a format for the brochure. The committee's recommendations
will then be forwarded to the Historic Landmark Commission for final approval.
Anticipated Results:
It has long been the desire of the Historic Landmark Commission to create a historic tour
brochure. The Convention and Tourism Bureau also gets frequent requests for
information on local historic sites. The anticipated users of the brochure will be local
citizens interested in learning more about the history of their city and tourists who are
interested in visiting historic sites in Beaumont. The brochure will be distributed to
hotels, tourist attractions, restaurants, the Jefferson County Airport and the Convention
and Tourism Bureau's office. For the most part, the buildings and sites included in the
brochure will be those with local, state or National Register designations and will be
located throughout the city. The brochure is estimated to highlight 40-50 sites and will
include pictures and text. An initial run of 10,000 copies is anticipated.
Project Personnel;
The Chairman of the Historic Landmark Commission has appointed a committee
consisting of three Commission members, two local historians and one staff person. The
two local historians and other historical information sources will be used to prepare the
written descriptions of each site. A professional photographer will take the pictures. A
professional printing company will be hired to prepare the layout and graphics and print
the brochure.
