HomeMy WebLinkAboutCA-399} R 3 DATE: August 9, 1999 TO: Historic Landmark Commission FROM: Stephen C. Richardson, Planning Director SUBJECT: Request for approval of a certificate of appropriateness to demolish a residential structure at 1793-99 Liberty FILE: CA-399 The Planning Director recommends approval of this request. The City of Beaumont Clean Community Department has tagged the two-family structure at 1793--99 as substandard and in need of demolition. The structure was inspected and found to be in violation of the City of Beaumont Code of Ordinances pertaining to dangerous structures (see attached Inspection Report). The Clean Community Department is asking that the Historic Landmark Commission grant permission to demolish this structure. In June, 1997 Mr. Lester Tanton, property owner, indicated that he would enter into a work program. As of this date, no work program has been entered into. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) conducted a review of the property on October 17, 1997 and found the property to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C for architecture. The structure is listed in the 1989 SPARE Beaumont. The house was built c. 1905 and is of the Queen Anne style. The City has determined that needed repairs exceed 50% of the appraised value ($4,400 improvements; $9,900 total). The Historic Landmark Commission is asked to review this structure for historical significance and if it should be demolished. Exhibits are attached.
