SUBJECT: Request for approval of a certificate of appropriateness for the demolition of a house
at 2080 Laurel.
FILE: CA-798
NOTE: At the July 14, 2003 meeting, the Historic Landmark Commission
voted to deny CA-798 and asked Mr. Bethea if Entergy could market
the property. The Administration has asked that the item be put back
on the agenda.
STAFF REPORT
The Planning Manager recommends approval of this request.
Entergy owns the house at 2080 Laurel. The house is adjacent to an electrical substation and
is in disrepair. Sam Bethea, with Entergy, states that they have no plans to renovate or use the
house. Mr. Bethea states that if the house is removed, it is Entergy's intention to fence the lot
and incorporate it into the substation yard (the property is zoned RCR and would require a
specific use permit).
The property is listed in the 1990 SPARE Beaumont Survey. SPARE states that the house was
built c. 1925 and is of the Vernacular Craftsman style. The house is typical of middle class
housing built in Beaumont in the 1920's.
At the July 14 Historic Landmark Commission meeting, there was discussion about the
possibility of moving the building. However, there was concern that the cost of moving and
rehabilitating the house would be cost prohibitive. Pam Loiacano stated that the house was
substandard but was not a dangerous structure.
Exhibit is attached.
