and the reconstruction of the existing fireplace chimneys

STAFF REPORT
The Planning Manager recommends approval of this request.
P.T. Kojak, the applicant, is requesting a certificate of appropriateness
to allow the renovation of the chimneys and the construction of two
six foot wooden fences along the east and west sides of the property at
2240 Calder.
The Chambers house has recently been deeded to the Beaumont
Heritage Society for use as a museum. As part of the renovation
effort, 6' wood screening fences are proposed along the east and west
sides of the subject property. A 6' tall wrought iron style fence has
been constructed along the front of the property.
The Zoning Ordinance states that within a front yard, no solid wall or
fence shall exceed 4' in height. The reason for this request has to do
with the adjacent land uses to the east and west. To the east is a
machinery equipment and supplies wholesaler and to the west is a
convenience store. Currently, chain link fences run along the east
and west sides of the property. The 6' tall wood screening fence
would not only provide better security for the museum but would also
screen the adjacent land uses.
The fireplaces and chimneys are also being rebuilt. The look of the
chimneys will remain the same.
The house is listed in the 1990 SPARE Beaumont survey. SPARE
states that the house was constructed c. 1908 and is a fine example
of upper class housing built after the first Spindletop boom.
Exhibit is attached.
