STAFF REPORT
The Planning Manager recommends approval of CA-1240.
Ida Pyle, with the Colonel George Moffett Chapter of the DAR,
contacted the Planning Manager about work that needs to be done to
the Temple to the Brave and the need for the City of Beaumont
Historic Landmark Commission and the Jefferson County Historical
Society to approve that work.
In May, the Moffett Chapter voted to restore the Temple as a
Centennial Project. Ms. Pyle serves as Chairman of the project. She
enlisted the aid of Dr. Ware Petznick to help in the restoration.
The Temple is leaking under the large north wall stained glass window.
The wall has mildew/mold spots and the plaster is falling off the wall
in about a 20 inch area. One of the small stained glass windows on
the east wall has a small bulge inward. The stained glass window
depicting the Six Flags of Texas was broken sometime in the past and
was replaced with a plain stained glass window. The west wall has a
crack in the wall above one of the windows and one of the cornice
boards has pulled about 5-6 inches loose from the overhead structure.
On the outside, the stones are loose in some areas and work needs
to be done on the masonry. Blowing dirt and moisture is entering
the building, probably under the front doors. There may also be
foundation problems.
The DAR hopes to raise the necessary monies to make the needed
renovations. In addition, the group would like to restore the Six Flags
of Texas window to its original look. Once the building is secure,
attention will be shifted to the showcases and artifacts in the museum.
As stated earlier, Ms. Pyle felt that it was necessary for the Historic
Landmark Commission to review the proposed work and grant its
approval.
