HomeMy WebLinkAboutCA-1626 DATE: March 9, 2009 TO: Historic Landmark Commission FROM: Stephen C. Richardson, Planning Manager SUBJECT: Request for a certificate of appropriateness to allow an addition on the rear of a residential structure FILE: CA-1626 STAFF REPORT The Planning Manager recommends approval. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Crawford have applied for certificate of appropriateness to allow the construction of a 17' x 23' screened garden room on the rear of their home at 2515 Ashley. As stated by the Crawford=s architect, this garden room was initially planned as far back as 1985 when the kitchen area was remodeled and enlarged and a single story addition was added on the south end of the house. The garden room is to be a single story addition to the south end of the house and adjoining the current breakfast room. The existing hipped roof over the breakfast bay will be continued across the south facade to the east. The roof will be standing seam copper to continue the original roof on projecting porches. The screened porch will be supported on wrought iron columns to match those original to the house. The wrought iron balustrade will be duplicated to match the existing. Copper insect cloth will be installed on removable steel frames. A brick segment of wall on the east side will house a masonry firebox for a gas coal grate. The remainder of the terrace to the east will receive short brick posts with pyramidal stone tops and a wrought iron balustrade to match the existing. The house is listed in the 1991 SPARE Beaumont Survey. SPARE states that the house was built c. 1939 and is of the Neoeclectic style. The house is an example of upper class housing built in Beaumont in the 1930's. Exhibits are attached.
