STAFF REPORT
Staff recommends approval of the request subject to the Board of Adjustment granting
any needed setback variances.
Kenneth Berryhill has applied for a certificate of appropriateness to construct a
pigeonaire in the left corner of his front yard. The property is located at 2411 South St.
The Louisiana Office of Cultural Development, Division of Historic Preservation states,
“Pigeonniers, small towers with nesting boxes for birds on their upper floors, were found
on the most prosperous of Creole plantations . . . and were placed so as to ornament the
overall appearance of the plantation complex.”
With the strong Creole influence in Southeast Texas and Beaumont, such a structure will
enhance the district. Mr. Berryhill is proposing an 8’x8’ antique brick structure no more
than 14’ in height.
The house is not listed in the SPARE Beaumont Survey.
Exhibits are attached.
