HomeMy WebLinkAboutCA3124DATE: October 14, 2019 TO: Historic Landmark Commission FROM: Demi Laney, Planner I SUBJECT: A request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to construct hand rails to existing porch. FILE: CA -3124 STAFF REPORT Saeed Daniali seeks permission to remove the existing metal handrail and construct wood hand rails around the porch for the property located at 2572 McFaddin Street. The handrails will be made of wood and are to extend from the sides of the porch down the front steps. Mr. Daniali has provided a picture and sketch for a visual of what the final outcome will look like, per your approval. The submitted wood handrails enclosing the porch appear to be appropriate for a Craftsman style home in accordance to photos demonstrated in A Field Guide to American .Douses (Virginia & Lee McAlester, 1984) on pages 459-462. However, the wood handrails extending from the porch down the front steps do not appear to be appropriate. Common materials for handrails coming down the porch steps seem to be made of metal. Staff recommends approval of the wooden handrails enclosing the porch conditional to the paint matching the existing -trim. Staff recommends denial of the wood handrails extending from the porch down the front steps and recommends that to be made of metal. The house is not listed in the SPARE survey. Exhibits are attached. McAlester, Virginia & Lee. A Field Guide. to American Houses. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1984. Print.
