SUBJECT: A request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to construct hand rails to existing
porch.
FILE: CA -3124
STAFF REPORT
Saeed Daniali seeks permission to remove the existing metal handrail and construct wood hand
rails around the porch for the property located at 2572 McFaddin Street. The handrails will be
made of wood and are to extend from the sides of the porch down the front steps. Mr. Daniali
has provided a picture and sketch for a visual of what the final outcome will look like, per your
approval.
The submitted wood handrails enclosing the porch appear to be appropriate for a Craftsman style
home in accordance to photos demonstrated in A Field Guide to American .Douses (Virginia &
Lee McAlester, 1984) on pages 459-462. However, the wood handrails extending from the
porch down the front steps do not appear to be appropriate. Common materials for handrails
coming down the porch steps seem to be made of metal.
Staff recommends approval of the wooden handrails enclosing the porch conditional to the paint
matching the existing -trim. Staff recommends denial of the wood handrails extending from the
porch down the front steps and recommends that to be made of metal.
The house is not listed in the SPARE survey.
Exhibits are attached.

Eclectic Houses: Craftsman
SIDE -GABLED ROOF
1. Dallas, Texas; 1915. Lorrimer House. The typical exposed rafter i
ends show clearly here.
2. Salisbury, North Carolina; 1913. Rock House. Entry porches such as
this are less common than full -width porches.
3. Durham, North Carolina; 191 os. The wide expanse of porch without
porch supports allows an unrestricted view from the front windows (see
Ati'ligures 4, 7, and 8).
4. Louisville, Kentucky; igios. Side -gabled Craftsman houses fre-
quently have the attic area finished for bedrooms. Light comes from win-
dows in the gable and from large centered dormers (see also Figures 1, 3, 7,
and 8).
iy 5. Dallas, Texas; i92a. Clem House. Note the half-timbering in the
gables and the use of paired, tapering porch supports atop the wide pedes-
tals.
6. Dallas, texas; 1917, Wheaton House. Large round columns, such as
this, are seen in Craftsman pattern books, but are uncommon in actual ex-
amples.
iE 7. Lexington, Kentucky; igios.
8. Kansas City, Missouri; igios. The balcony gives this example a Swiss
Chalet feel.
