ENTITLED AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE NAME OF
CUNIFF AVENUE'TO MCKINLEY AVENUE, BEAUMONT,
JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF BEAUMONT:
THAT Cuniff Avenue, running north on Jackson Street and south of Buford Street in the
City of Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas, shown on Exhibit "A," attached hereto and
made a part hereof, be and the same is hereby renamed to McKinley Avenue.
The meeting at which this resolution was approved was in all things conducted in
strict compliance with the Texas Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code, Chapter
551.
PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL of the City of Beaumont this the 1st day of
October, 2019.

fn 1909 at 256 COuniff Street, Beaumont, `Texas, Reu, J.O. O'Quinn(deceased) began
a prayer meeting in his home, As the' band of worshippers began to increase, the group
decided to be moved to a place on -Buford and Tierring ,Street in an old market to hold
services. As the group grew even larger, they had to moue their worship service into a he
double house in the 700 block. o f -Bu ford Street. Rev. O'Quinn served as Pastor until
1411. He died passed away before he accomplished -his dream of acquiring a more desirable
and suitable worship place.
In 1011, 'Rev. V. eolentan(deceased) began to carry on the unfinished work with a few
members. ?finder his guidance, the present site at 775 eun.if f Street was purchased with
the faithful members- Sis. Ylora Stewart, Sis. Gillian i jantEns, and Sis. Richardson(all
deceased), who wort ed with all their strength, es ergy, and talents and decided fo rename
the church (foryner Kame: Sunlight -Baptist (9hurch) to McKinley Avenue -Baptist Ghu;ch
'dlovember 2/, 1913 the first Sunday School began with 22 members. The first ordained
deacon was -Bro. Hosea Wyatt. (deceased)
In /9!8, Rev. Wm (9. Johnson was elected pastor of the newly named McKinley Avenue
-Baptist (9husch. He decided to renovate in 1419. he se7ved until he resigned. Then Rev.
V .T -Bingham was elected as pastor. --He served a short tine and theca resigned. Following
his resignation. rev. Strong was elected and for health reasons, .he also resigned, (both
deceased)

our current street location name from Cuniff St. to
