HomeMy WebLinkAboutCA3105DATE: September 9, 2019 TO: Historic Landmark Commission FROM: Demi Laney, Planner I SUBJECT: A request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to replace the front door to a house. FILE: CA -3105 STAFF REPORT Jim Dangaran seeks permission to replace the front door to his property located at 2555 Louisiana Street. Mr. Dangaran has provided a picture of the door he intends to use, pending your approval. The submitted door choice does appear to be appropriate for a Minimal Traditional house in accordance to photos demonstrated in A Field Guide to American Houses (Virginia & Lee McAlester, 198 4) on page 478. The transom light in the paneled door appears to have been a popular trend for that era. Staff recommends approval of the door. The house is in the 1991 SPARE Beaumont Survey. SPARE states that the house was built in 1942. The house is an example of World War II housing popular throughout the country. Exhibits are attached. McAlester, Virginia & Lee. [935-50) With the economic Depression of the 1430s came this compromise style which reflects the form of traditional Eclectic houses, but lacks their deco- rative detailing. Roof pitches are low or intermediate, rather than steep as in the preceding Tudor style. Eaves and rake are close, rather than over- hanging as in the succeeding Ranch style. Usually, but not always, there is a large chimney and at least one front -facing gable, both echoing Tudor features. In fact, many examples suggest Tudor cottages with the roof line lowered and detailing removed. These houses were built in great num- bers in the years immediately preceding and following World War II; they commonly dominate the large tract -housing developments of the period. As the photographs show, they were built of wood, brick, stone, or a mix- ture of these wall -cladding materials. Although most were relatively small one-story houses, occasional two-story examples are also seen. More com- monly, two-story houses of the period have extra detailing and represent late examples of one of the traditional Eclectic styles, usually Colonial Re- vival or Monterey. 3 1 2 6"'•ff r.
