HomeMy WebLinkAboutCA3096DATE: August 12, 2019 TO: Historic Landmark Commission FROM: Demi Laney, Planner I SUBJECT: A request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to remove shutters, reduce and replace two front windows. TWIN 11 STAFF REPORT Taha Kahn, property owner, reduced and replaced the two front windows and removed the shutters from the house located at 2225 Pecos Street without the benefit of a CA. Mr. Kahn requests to keep those changes, per your approval. The original windows were larger and contained an eight over eight profile. The new windows are reduced in size and have a six over six profile. The shutters have also been removed from the house. This house is categorized as a Craftsman style home. The original larger windows appear to be more appropriate for a Craftsman style house in accordance with photos demonstrated in A Field Guide to American Douses (McAlester et al., pg. 456-457). The examples listed in the book all display the front windows to be of larger size, but do reveal that shutters are not typical of this style home. Staff recommends denial of Mr. Kahn's request to reduce the size of the two front windows. Staff does recommend approval to allow the removal of shutters conditional to painting the exposed siding to match the rest of the house and installation of trim to match original. The house is not listed in the SPARE survey. Exhibits are attached. McAlester, Virginia & Lee. A Field Guide to American Houses. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1964. Print. There is a section of hipped roof in the front with a gable above. 4. Kansas City, Missouri; rgtos. This stucco example has three front facing gables, all with half-timbered detailing, 5. The slightly tapered porch -roof supports, extending from ground level, are of irregular brick masonry. Note how the main roof extends over the porch. 6.
