HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 104 CCCLN/GH/5/18/72 A R E S 0 L U T I 0 N WHEREAS, the fire and police employees, under the laws of the State of Texas, circulated a petition for the purpose of requiring an election to be called by the City Council for the voters of the City of Beaumont to determine whether Grade I fire and police employees shall have a minimum monthly wage of $704.00; and, WHEREAS, this petition was filed with the City Clerk on March 15, 1972 and was certified to the City Council on March 28, 1972 as being in accordance with the requirements of the State law; and, WHEREAS, the City Council was required to call the election within ninety (90) days of March.28, 1972; and, WHEREAS, the City Council in good faith set an election for the above purpose for June 13, 1972, and thereafter was advised that a special election for State Representative position had been set for that date which prohibited an election for the fire and police pay raise question; and, WHEREAS, this City Council has reviewed the Compensation - Classification Plan adopted for all employees on February 22,, 1972 and finds that the wage rate paid to fire and police in the City of Beaumont as compared to other communities of similar size to be within reason and is a just compensation for like work, and similarly finds that on the whole all other employees were placed in positions of comparable wage levels as to other municipalities as well as the local competitive wage for similar jobs; and, WHEREAS, this Council believes that the adopted plan will provide adequate compensation for.all employees and therefore cannot support the $95 request; and, WHEREAS, should the citizens of this community approve the minimum wage for fire and police to be $95 more than adopted on February 22, 1972, that all employees be given a $95. a month increase; and, WHEREAS, the estimated cost of this implementation would be approximately $1,270,000 on an annual basis and $1,590,000 on a fifteen (15) month basis; and, WHEREAS, the City Council finds that the existing revenues are not sufficient to offset this continuing annual cost, and services should not be reduced; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BEAUMONT: That should this election pass, it would be the intention of this Council to raise all permanent employees $95 a month at an annual cost of approximately $1,27.0,000 and proceed to raise the ad valorem tax by approximately 370 per $100 valuation to pay for this additional cost of opera.ting the city government.
