Your letter of 18th Inst. above matter.
After investigating the closing of Palace
and Leonard Streets, as shown on the accompanying map,
I find that Leonard Street, for the entire distance
that is desired to be closed, i now a gulley, and
Palace Street is only a twenty -foot alley.
I see no reaEon why either of these streets
should --be left opened, as it will .be dnly_-a._ question of__ - _
time when this whole river front will be bought up'.- in a
large tract.
I am passing this to you'for your legal advice
As to the closing of these streets.
Y s very truly,

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
of -Beaumont. -
Gent lemen;
The Gulf Export & Transportation Company begs to
petition you to pass such ordinances as will close certain
alleys and streets, allowing them to revert to the property
abutt ing .
The reason for this is that this company owns con-
siderable real estate on the river -front in the City of
Beaumont, which was bought for our own anticipated use, but
which idea was abandoned by force of circumstances some
years ago; since which time this land has been held in block
solely.because we believe it is very important to the future
development -of the City of Beaumont, being the largest piece
of .vacant ground adjacent to the river within the city.
This company does not wish to dispose of the land in- pieces
or lots, but feels its patriotic duty is to hold this land
until some large enterprise can use it to the advantage of
the surrounding country.
It . is somewhat cut up by certain alleys and streets
araund ; %nrhi chthis o any__bought and has fully. paid -for
ajoining prpperty. We, therefore, beg you to .close the
following streets;
Palace Street - which is an alley running from Buford
Street and serving certain .properti._es .which we bought .
The . alley terminates in the center of our property with the
square end. ' We own all of the- property from the north end
of Palace Street for 273 -feet on its west side. All o.f the
property on the north end of Palace Street and all.of the
property from the north end of Palane Street for 260 -feet on
its east side. We,therefore,_ request that ygg,p,ermit the
alley_ to be closed for 260 fe.et .from its north end on account
of _our__ovming all.. -of the property on both sides for this
distance.
Leonard Street - the extension of Leonard Street_ .ends
in a ditch that. should b.e filled to. stop erosion- and entirely
separates our property into two pieces. We otim all of Lot 1

south line of Lot -1, being some 130 -feet consisting of a ditch
and' -steep banks of the river. Is between property belonging
altogether to this corapany__.__a_ndvie :rould.._like_. to _unit.e._-the
property by the closing; of,.this. part_ of =the street, that the
land may be offered in one solid block .
This land is being held for sale at very reasonable
prices to any concern who will be a betterment to our city,
and no concern can purchase such a piece of land except one of
considerable value to our future develop m ent .
We would appreciate your -co-operat ion in our efforts
along this line.
Very truly yours-,
