SUBJECT: Request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to expand front porch and replace
front windows.

STAFF REPORT
Saeed Daniali removed the brick planters and wrought iron columns from his front porch, and
began to construct a wooden deck in front of his house located at 2574 McFaddin Avenue. No
Certificate of Appropriateness or permit was requested prior to construction. In addition, the one
over one double window on the front porch was replaced with two (2) nine over nine windows.
The proposed deck porch is not typical of ranch style houses as demonstrated in A Field Guide
to American Houses (Virginia & Lee McAlester, 1984) pages 479-480.
Staff recommends denial of the request for the deck and railings, and approval of the windows
and columns.
The house is not listed in the SPARE survey.

This house is supported by several piers. After exposure to "500 Year" flood and
36" plus rain in a short period of time, the building footing settled 4" to 9". The
house was leveled a few months ago, as result of leveling several interior walls
were severely cracked and two windows- one in front of the house and one at the
back of the house- were cracked. Because of the age of the house we could not
find matching windows and finally we decided to buy windows from local
businesses. Also, the tiles covering the existing porch were separated from their
base. These tiles are very old, and they are not available in market. In order to
have a safe surface we have to the resurface porch.
