The goal of this policy is to define the standard of care for any patient presenting with
signs of shock,
11. Protocol
A. Institute protocol "203.01A" for all patients.
B. Control external bleeding with appropriate measures,
C. Unless contraindicated, elevate the lower extremities 12".
D. Maintain body heat.
E. Give nothing by mouth.
F. Prepare for immetliate transport.
G. Note: Assess shock from any cause or origin as a Iife threatening condition which
requires aggressive pre -hospital care and rapid transport. Early recognition is the key
to survival. Remember to examine the whole picture with a patient and do not wait
until the blood pressure drops—this is one of the last signs.
