The goal of this policy is to define the standard of care for any patient presenting with
abdominal trauma.
II. Protocol
A. As with protocol 203.01M, because of the close proximity of the chest,
responders should be aware of possible injuries to the chest also. Injuries to the
abdomen can result in severe internal bleeding. Most patients with significant
abdominal trauma will be managed under the shock protocol. Some specific items
of abdominal management are included below.
B. Institute protocol "203.01A" for all patients.
C. Evisceration:
1. Apply moist, non -cotton based dressing to intestines. DO NOT TRY TO
REINSERT THEM.
D. Impaled object:
1. Secure object with bulk dressing.
E. Treat for shock as indicated by protocol 203.01P.
