The goal of this policy is to define the standard of care for any patient presenting with possible
spinal trauma.
11. Definitions
A. Spinal Trauma — any pain, tenderness, deformity, or numbness to the spinal column area
and/or any patient who has sustained a significant MOI which could result in a spinal
column injury.
Ill. Protocol
A. Apply manual C-spine alignment.
B. Apply appropriate sized extrication collar.
C. Maintain manual alignment until the patient is secured in a KED or long spine board.
D. Secure patient to long spine board utilizing CID's, straps, and tape.
E. Check pulse, motor, and sensation after each step.
F. Prepare for immediate transport.
G. NOTE: When evaluating a patient for mechanism of injury for a spinal injury, the
provider must also consider the age, sex, and weight of the patient. For example, an
elderly female patient who falls from a standing position is at considerable risk for spinal
injury due to osteoporosis of the spine, whereas a 30 year old male with the same fall
would not be.
