The goal of this policy is to define the standard of care for any diabetic patient.
11. Protocol
A. Institute protocol "203.01A" for all patients.
B. Determine the following:
1. Does patient take medication for their condition?
2. When did they last tape their medication?
3. When did they last eat?
C. Take Glucometer reading.
D. Administer 12.5 to 25 G of glucose paste PO, if patient meets following criteria:
1. Glucose reading less than 80.
2. Patient is conscious with intact gag reflex.
3. Patient is symptomatic:
a. Altered mental status
b. Slurred speech
c. Staggering
d. Cold clammy skin
e. Uncharacteristic behavior
E. If patient is unconscious see PROTOCOL 203.01E.

PHYSIOLOGICAL ACTIONS:
Carbohydrate glucose source.
THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS:
Raises blood glucose level.
INDICATIONS:
Hypoglycemia, established or suspected
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Use caution when administering to patients with
altered mental status; do not compromise airway.
DOSAGE:
25 - SO G of paste.
ROUTE:
PO
SPECIAL NOTES:
May be given to patients with altered mental
status but intact gag reflex by carefully
"smearing" the paste on the oral mucosa.
Is distasteful.
SIDE EFFECTS:
None.
