The goal of this policy is to define the standard of care for any patient requiring
treatment.
II. Protocol
A. This treatment protocol should be instituted on any patient requiring treatment.
B. Spinal immobilization, if indicated.
1. Spinal immobilization is indicated in patients who have experienced blunt
trauma to the thorax; head trauma; penetrating trauma at or near the spine;
axial spine trauma, or significant deceleration injury.
2. Spinal immobilization shall consist of manual stabilization as soon as
possible, followed by placement of a cervical collar as soon as practical.
The patient should then be secured to a long spine board (or appropriate
substitute).
C. Airway control using the appropriate technique and device for patient condition
which could include:
1. Manual maneuvers (jaw thrust or chin lift)
2. Oropharyngeal airway, as appropriate
3. Nasopharyngeal airway, if available
D. Breathing
1. Patients should receive ventilatory assistance and oxygen therapy as follows;

E. Circulation -Control of major external bleeding by:
1. Direct pressure and elevation
2. Pressure points
3. Tourniquet (last resort)
F. Attach semi-automatic defibrillator (SAED) to all apneic/pulse-less patients.
1. CPR indicated for pulse -less patients who do not meet DOS criteria.
G. Other treatment as specified in specific protocol.
H. Provide report to responding EMS unit and include the following:
1. Level of consciousness
2. General description of what was found
3. AED use
L Monitor and record vital signs every five minutes for critical patients and ever
15 minutes for non-critical patients.
