William J. Barton Papers, 1839-1919,1980s
DESCRIPTION
William J. Barton was an early Beaumont area resident who originally came from England. He was born
in 1823 near Bristol, England, but left sometime before 1850 to settle in Taylor's Bayou, Texas, about ten
miles south of Beaumont. While living in the area he performed marriages, taught school, worked as a
tailor, wrote and notarized documents, and served for a time as the county commissioner. He died in
August of 1888.
This collection contains early Jefferson County records, many related to William J. Barton and his family.
Included in this collection is business and personal correspondence of William J. Barton (1853-1885);
correspondence on taxation of Taylor's Bayou (1884); correspondence and receipts of C.H. Tyrrell (1918-
1919); deeds from Jefferson County (1869-1894); genealogical research on the Barton, Hilderbrandt,
Holst, and Taylor families; information on the estate of William Carr (1854-1879); printed materials
(1890); receipts (1850-1886); and warranty deeds from Jefferson County, Texas, and East Feliciana
Parish, Louisiana (1839-1895).
