Texas Society of Professional Engineers , Sabine Chapter
Dates: 1940-1989
Description
The National Society of Professional Engineers was organized in 1934, as a result of the world
wide depression which started in 1929. The Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) was
founded in 1936 and was incorporated under the laws of the State of Texas in 1937, only days
after the New London School disaster which killed 294 students and teachers due to a natural
gas leak.
Early in 1940, some of the registered engineers of southeast Texas arranged a meeting of the
TSPE for the purpose of determining the interest in organizing a local chapter. An organizational
meeting was held in May of 1940 and on August 19, 1940, the official charter of the Sabine
Chapter was adopted at Hotel Beaumont, creating the third state chapter.
