Loan and Martin Edwards Collection
Dates: 1850s-1974 (Content: 1630-1974)
Description
The Cum and Martin Edwards Collection consists of a 1931 estate agreement known as the
Caswell Trust. This trust agreement was executed for the benefit of W.H. Burges, Seawillow
Caswell Keith, Emma Caswell Chamberlain, Sadie Caswell Wiess, and Ruth Bucklin Caswell.
These members were pioneer families of Beaumont and descendants of Robert Kidd (1774-
1890). Mr. James S. Edwards was the nephew of Sadie Caswell Wiess (1872-1945). He and his
son, Cum Edwards (1904-1960), were named trustees.
James S. Edwards (1877-1947), was a prominent businessman involved in local church and
fraternal affairs. In 1911 he organized the J.S. Edwards Insurance and Real Estate Company.
Edwards' son, Cum Edwards (1904-1960), joined the firm and was responsible for some of the
city's largest real estate transactions.
The Caswell Trust was current until the death of its final member Seawillow Caswell Keith in
1949. The Caswell Trust was terminated in 1950 when its executors Cum Edwards and
William C. Keith were released from their administrative duties.
