The Elbert M. Ratcliff Papers, 1943-1945
DESCRB'TION
The Elbert M. Ratcliff Collection focuses on the World War II
maritime production at the Pennsylvania Ship Yards during the
inclusive years from 1943-1945. Mr. Ratcliff was employed in the
accounting department in the prewar days and later became a
statistician for the company.
The collection places emphasis on two (2) naval vessels. "The
Karin," hull #320, christened by his wife Jackie Mae Ratcliff on
June 22, 1944, and the "Natalie 0. Warren," which was converted
into the world's first sea -going liquid petroleum transport
vessel for the Warren Petroleum Company in November, 1947. The
Karin was converted into a deep water drilling ship for the
Storm Drilling Company -in 1967, and renamed "The Typhoon."
The Elbert M. Ratcliff collection consists of correspondence,
military records, newspaper clippings, five (5) war rationing
books, twenty-three (23) 8"x 10" photographs and one (1) box
containing the broken champagne bottle in which Mrs. Ratcliff
christened the "Karin."
