The Beaumont Independent School District Records, 1984-1991
DESCRIPTION
In 1881, officials of the City of Beaumont made a provision for an 1883 election that would
determine whether public schools in Beaumont would be placed under City control as an
independent district. The election would also determine whether the school board would be
appointed by city council or elected at large. Ultimately the Beaumont Independent School
District was founded.
In 1884, the Beaumont Independent School Districts' founding year, there were 253 white and
174 negro children of school age in the city. The old Fireman's Hall and the Negro Odd Fellow
Hall served as the first two school buildings.
For more information on the history of the BISD, see Course of Study Rules and Regulations
of the Beaumont Public Schools, 1910-1911 in the Tyrrell's book collection.
This collection is organized into a Budgets series and a Reports series and spans the years 1984-
1991.
