Black Baptist Churches of Beaumont Collection, 1968-1986
DESCRIPTION
The Live Oak Missionary Baptist Church is credited with being the first black Baptist Church organized
in Beaumont. It was organized in 1868 under Reverend A. Venerable. Only two years later, other
churches began to branch off from Live Oak, giving rise directly and indirectly to many of the black
Baptist churches in the area. One of these churches was the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, which
began in 1894 with Reverend A. Venerable and approximately 85 other members of Live Oak. Another
black Baptist church in the area that started early in the 1900s was the Fellowship Missionary Baptist
Church that was organized as Fellowship Baptist Church on January 30, 1903, by Reverend R. Steven and
others.
This small collection contains booklets and other items largely from historically black Baptist churches in
the Beaumont, Texas, area. Most of the booklets contain short histories of the church, photographs of the
church and members, as well as lists of patrons. The churches documented in this collection are the
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, Beaumont, Texas; the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church,
Beaumont, Texas; the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Los Angeles, California; and the
Northside Antioch Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. In addition there are two booklets from the Baptist
Missionary and Educational Convention of Texas.
