The Gulf States Utilities Collection, 1925-1993
DESCRIPTION
Gulf States Utilities Company was incorporated on August 25th, 1925, under a charter
providing the light to supply the general public the following: electric light and power; gas;
water; and ice. On September 1, 1925, Gulf States Utilities acquired the properties of the Orange
Ice Light and Water Company. In early 1926 Gulf States Utilities became a major operating
company on the Texas -Louisiana Gulf Coast It had no mortgage and its Charter was as broad as
could be obtained under Texas Laws. Gulf States continued to expand through the purchase of
component companies. Some of these acquisitions included (but are not limited to): The
Eastern Texas Electric Company (acq. 1926); The Western Public Service Company (acq.
1927); and the Baton Rouge Electric Company (acq. 1938). On duly 1, 1947, Gulf States
Utilities separated from the holding company from which it was generated. Following this
separation, continued community growth and increased demand for power fostered the
expansion of Gulf States Utilities. Ultimately Gulf States Utilities was purchased by the Entergy
Corp., a company based out of New Orleans, La. The takeover occurred on Wednesday,
December 29, 1994.
The Gulf States Utilities Collection contains secondary research materials that describe the
genesis and growth of the company until it was purchased by the Entergy Corp. in December of
1993. Included in the collection are the following series: Plain Talks newsletters, 1947-1993;
transcripts of speeches by GSU personnel, 1954-1964; surveys indicating industrial information,
1925, 1935; printed materials, 1930-1970; reports, 1963-1966; and two bound collected items.
