This collection contains four issues of commemorative stamps: the "Babe" Zaharias
Commemorative Stamp; the Texas Independence Day Commemorative Stamp; the African Violet
Commemorative Stamp; and the Buffalo Soldier Commemorative Stamp.
The "Babe" Zaharias Stamp was issued September 22, 1981. "Babe" Zaharias, a native of
Beaumont, is known as the greatest all-around American woman athlete of all time. During her
life she excelled in every sport, but baseball track and golf were her best fields. Many of
Zaharias' athletic records remain unbroken.
The Texas Independence Day stamp was issued on March 2, 1986. The stamp honors Texas
as an independent nation and as a State of the U. S. Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845.
Sam Houston is pictured on this stamp.
The African Violet Stamp was issued on October 29, 1993. The stamp was first issued out of the
Beaumont, Texas, headquarters of the African Violet Society of America. The stamp was
designed by Ned Scidler.
The Buffalo Soldier Stamp was issued April 22, 1994. This stamp was issued to honor the U.
S. Army's African American "Buffalo Soldiers". These soldiers served with patriotism and
courage in the Indian Wars, the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, the Mexican
Expedition, WWI, WWII, and the Korean War.
