Sprott Family Papers
DESCRIPTION
This collection contains copies of photographs and a brief history of the Sprott family, one of Beaumont's
prominent black families. Dr. Maxie Sprott, Sr. was very instrumental in the establishment of the Sprott
Hospital, a unique facility built to accommodate Beaumont's black citizens. Mr. and Mrs. Sprott moved
to Beaumont around the turn of the century and were married in 1906. They bought a home on Roberts
Avenue and raised nine children. Ed Sprott, Jr. opened the Sprott Clinic at 2390 Cartwright Street, the
first modern black facility in the area, in 1944. Long active in affairs of the black community, he was one
of the foremost leaders in promoting better race relations in this city in the 1950s. The efforts of men like
Dr. Ed Sprott, Jr. have had an important influence on the city's modern medical history. Copies of
photographs included in this collection are of Sprott family members and of the Sprott Hospital.
