J.D. Campbell Collection, 1893-1988
DESCRIPTION
Judge I.D. Campbell was bom in Chappell Hill, Texas, during the Civil War. He studied at Sam Houston
Normal College in Huntsville and Soule University in Chappell Hill. After teaching briefly in the towns
of Lockhart and Scaly, he went to work in the county clerk's office in Brenham. There he decided to
study law and passed the bar in 1885. After practicing in Brenham, he moved to Beaumont in 1902
where he was in private practice until 1908. During his time in Beaumont he worked as an appointed
corporation counjudge, with a private firm, as the elected city attorney, and as the justice of the 60"
District Court. Judge Campbell passed away on April 26, 1935.
This collection is comprised largely ofJudge J. D. Campbell's business and personal papers and other
items related to the activities of him and his family. These take the form of artifacts, correspondence,
manuscripts, newspapers and newsletters, notebooks, photographs, programs, publications, scrapbooks,
and speeches.
