DESCRIPTION
The Neches River Festival was conceived on May 3, 1947, when
Mr. Caldwell MCFaddin, President of Beaumont's Chamber of Commerce
and Mr. Clarence DeBusri, Executive Vice President and Secretary
discussed plans for the betterment of Beaumont and the Chamber of
Commerce. On May 28, 1949, a charter was obtained from The State
of Texas for a nonprofit organization named "The Neches River
Festival, Inc." On May 28, 1949, The Neches River Festival made
its first debut; this spring festival commemorated its forty-third
annual event in April, 1991, and has successfully promoted the
city's heritage and area future with the theme of "Beaumont's
Annual Good Will Event of the Year".
This collection contains 35 volumes of The Neches River
Festival Scrapbooks. Each year, the festival organization produced
a special scrapbook commemorating the individuals involved in the
production of the Neches River Festival. The authors of each
scrapbook took great care in producing beautifully engraved or
embroidered volumes illustrative of this fine event. The
researcher will find a rich collection of photographs of Festival
officers, committee members and participants. Earlier scrapbooks
also contain some newspaper clippings describing Festival
activities. The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically and
include the following years: 1950-1959, 1960-1969, 1970-1979
(missing 1975 and 1976), and 1980-1988 (missing 1983 and 1984).
