DESCRIPTION
Chapter C.C. of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational
Organization) formed on October 27, 1999, at the home of Mrs.
Charles Hugh Todd, Jr. Women who had been members of the
organization in other cities formed the nucleus for the Beaumont
club. The national P.E.O. Sisterhood was formed on January 21,
1869, as a college sorority on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan
College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The organization operates as
a philanthropic and educational club. It works to support Coffey
College in Nevada, Missouri, as a women's junior college of no more
than 350 students. The organization also offers various
scholarships and loans for women pursuing higher education.
This collection consists of six scrapbooks. The researcher
will mainly find newspaper clippings recounting club and membership
activities. Many members belonged to numerous other civic
organizations in Beaumont and participated in a wide range of
activities. The collection also includes some correspondence and
a few photographs. Members removed club yearbooks prior to
donation in order to preserve club secrets.
