Mr. O'Brien was son to early and prominent resident, Mr. Georqe W. O'Brien, who was a captain in the Civil war. Mr. Chenault was educated at Beaumont Public Schools and eventually earned his law education at the University of Texas at Austin. Before he earned his law deqree, Mr. O'Brien became a Lieutenant in the Spanish American war. Upon his return and acquirinq his deqree, he established his career as an attorney with his partner and brother-in-law, Mr. Georqe Chilton. Althouqh he never actually enqaqed in courtroom cases, he was hiqhly respected in his field. Reqardinq personal accomplishments, Mr. O'Brien provided the name for a camp of war veterans, known as the Chenault O'Brien camp No. 12 United Spanish war veterans; he also was a member of the Jefferson county and Texas Bar associations. Mr. O'Brien provided extensively to the proqress and welfare of Beaumont. He was active as a Mason, a member of the veterans' orqanization and the camp. Mr. Chenault O'Brien passed away on Auqust 8, 1940. This collection consists of correspondence to various attorneys and law offices in and around Beaumont ranqinq in years from 1867 to 1935. Tax records, vendor's lien notes, and warranty deeds all ranqinq from 1865 to 1925 also make up the collection. Also included in the collection are pay records which present an economic view of the 1800's. The collection contains letters not only from the O'Brien family, but also a few letters from the Bordaqes family.
