The Texas Gulf Historical Society Collection, 1835-2006
DESCRIPTION
On November 9, 1964, an organizational meeting was held by prospective members of the
Texas Gulf Historical Society. The officers of the society were Liscomb Nerve]] president;
Tassie Polk Jones, vice-president; Mary Weed Fletcher, secretary; and Alberta Russell
Livesay, treasurer and founder, Roger Omohundro. This addition to the community of
historical societies would maintain its offices in Beaumont and have as its initial purposes to
study, compile and preserve the historical events of significance to the community and to
publish articles of interest related to the development of the Texas Gulf region.
The utmost objective of the Texas Gulf Historical Society would be the establishment of a
perpetual body for the study and compilation of records and the commemoration of events
generally accepted as historical; to promote the means for the further preservation of local
and regional records, documents and memorabilia pertaining to events, persons, families and
institutions which may be deemed historical; to publish tracts, monographs and articles
written by members in the departments of local or regional history, biography or genealogy;
and to publish written contributions of non-members, who by special research are able to
vivify, verify, or validate discovery or testimony bearing on the history of Texas.
No restrictions apply.
