DESCRIPTION
Lena Triplett Milam was born in Sweet Springs, Missouri on
October 19, 1889, and lived in Missouri until she was ten years old
when her family moved to Ennis, Texas. In 1903, she moved to
Beaumont, Texas, where her father, the late H.F. Triplett, was
Superintendent of Beaumont City schools. On June 9, 1905, she
married Allen Barnes Milam. She taught school in Beaumont and
served as the Beaumont School District's Music Supervisor from 1911
to 1955. Lena Milam had a profound impact on the development of
the musical arts in Beaumont. The researcher will find a complete
biographical sketch of Dr. Lena Milam's impressive life in
scrapbook 1 within this collection.
This collection contains two scrapbooks focusing on Dr. Lena
Milam's 100th birthday celebration on October 19, 1989, and
memorial services that followed one month later on November 8,
1989. The scrapbooks are comprised of numerous photographs,
correspondence, birthday and sympathy cards, and celebration and
memorial programs. The collection is maintained in its original
