DESCRIPTION
This collection contains the papers of Gladys Harned-Quilliam
(1899-1989), Jewell Harned (1899-1980), and Hazel Harned (1895-
1993). The Harned sisters arrived in Beaumont in 1919 and ranked
among those most responsible for the development of Beaumont's
musical and cultural organizations during the twentieth century.
They involved themselves in numerous organizations as teachers,
directors and writers. The collection highlights such music and
civic organizations as the Beaumont Music Week, the Beaumont Music
Commission, the Beaumont Symphony Orchestra, the Beaumont Light
Opera, the Lamar School of Music, several church choirs, and the
Melody Maids.
The Quilliam-Harned Papers are a varied source of
correspondence, organizational notes, program guides,
manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks.
Each series describes, in detail, the historic evolution of
music and the arts in Beaumont. Of special interest to the
researcher will be the organizational notes and the writings of
Gladys Harned-Quilliam as entertainment and art critic for the
Beaumont Journal.
